THINGS THEY SAID TODAY

Today in history, John Kennedy moved to bar racial and religious discrimination in federally funded housing.

The Prevalence of Enlightenment

It was a big moment.  The lives of many Americans would be improved and some enlightenment would hopefully prevail. The prevalence of enlightenment is still debatable.
People read about that story in the New York Times, Washington Post or their local newspapers - many of which struggle to survive today.  It was a continuation of civil rights momentum that marked much of 1960s America.

Who Reads What?

Does anybody read anymore?  It was likely that most who did read the papers that day never read about another remarkable moment one month earlier.   The moment still echoes in history.  A little know troupe had just put down its marker across the sea. The echo of that sound carried across the waves. It crashed on our shores and the invasion had begun.

The BBC Remembers
